    I think I know what you mean. My late Dad was a southern Italian immigrant who, it seemed, could make flowers grow from cement! I always marveled at this ability precisely because I could barely break the earth with a shovel. People, such as your wife, who have a talent for this sort of thing are somehow closer to something ineffable…if not to “God” (however one defines Him) then to the mysteries of life itself. I am convinced of this.

  2. Charles, Joan tried to teach me and it was a failure. I planted three shrub roses several years ago and while they continue to live the key word is “shrub.” They look horrible this year ’cause I screwed up the trimming rules that Joan taught me. All the best.
